A great way to spend the day is with a day-trip to the historic town of Melaka is located 2.5 hours south of Kuala Lumpur. Melaka is strategically located along the Straits of Melaka. Due to its ideal location, Melaka was home to the British, Portuguese, and the Dutch, all of contributed and influenced the unique culture of the Baba Nyonyas. The town is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site and on this trip, you will visit many of the historical landmarks such as Porta de Santiago (a fortress built by the Portuguese in 1511; is also known as A’Famosa), the ruins of St. Paul’s Church (built in 1521 and were St. Francis Xavier was once buried). You will also go to the famous Red Square, with the Stadhyus (where you will find the reddish-pink building that the Dutch once used as their administrative centre) and Christ Church. Visit Harmony Street where you will find, within a stone’s throw of each other, the Cheng Hoon Teng Buddhist-Taoist temple, the Kampung Keling Mosque and the Sri Poyatha Moorthi Hindu temple. A fitting representation of Malaysia’s 3 main cultures co-existing with one another. A trip to Melaka is not complete without a stroll along Jonker Street with its brightly coloured shops and vendors on both side of the road peddling their wares, ranging from cheap souvenirs to hand-crafted Baba Nyonya shoes.
