Orang Utans & Longhouses - 8 days

Explore the hidden wonders of Sarawak with this 8-day package.

Visit the Semenggoh Orang Utan Rehabilitation Centre to observe the Orang Utans. Go on a trek in Bako National Park with its wild and diverse array of fauna and flora - from pitcher plants to Proboscis monkeys. Travel to the Batang Ai National Park and embrace the tribal Iban culture. Enjoy a jungle retreat by the lake at the Hilton Batang Ai Longhouse Resort. Finally, round off your visit with a couple of days at the beach.

Day 1:    Arrive in Kuching

Home to the White Rajahs of North Borneo from 1841 to 1946, Kuching is the capital city of Sarawak and a town that played great political and historical importance during the colonial days of Borneo.

This first day is free at your leisure. But we are sure you will find more than enough to do in this charming town.

The town centre offers great museums, colourful temples and other historical sites. Explore these landmarks, but don't forget to leave time to explore Chinatown, Jalan India, the Waterfront Promenade and Jalan Padungan (one of the liveliest streets in Kuching, where you will find old cafes and local noodle shops with a growing number of trendy cafes, bars and restaurants popping up).

Day 2:    Kuching

A day at the Bako National Park is always a treat for nature lovers.

In the morning, transfer to the Bako Fishing Village outside Kuching to catch a motorized boat. Cruise along between the coast and the South China Sea to reach Bako National Park.

Take a stroll along the compound's boardwalk where you are likely (but not guaranteed) to see some local wildlife, ranging from monitor lizards and macaques to Proboscis monkeys and hornbills. Trek through lush mangrove forest to observe the mud-skippers and blue-fiddler crabs. Be on the lookout for local wildlife, such as the Proboscis monkeys or the Borneo bearded pig. Climb to the plateau, home to various botanical delights and several species of the carnivorous pitcher plants. Take note of the the changes in the vegetation (mangrove, rainforest, kerangan and padang forest).

After a lunch at the canteen, begin your journey back to Kuching, where you will arrive back in the late afternoon. (B=Breakfast, L=Lunch)

Day 3:    Kuching to Iban Longhouse

Visit the Semenggoh Wildlife Centre. Originally established in 1975 with the mission of caring for injured, orphaned or captured wild animals, the centre met with such success that it has since expanded its mission to include the study of orang utan biology and behaviour. The centre is a safe and natural haven for dozens of semi-wild orang utan, graduates of the rehabilitation programme. It is also home to numerous baby orang utan, born in the wild to rehabilitated mothers, a further testament to the success of the programme. During feeding time, you will have the opportunity to observe these gentle primates.

Pass through scenic countryside views of rice fields, rubber, cocoa, pepper and oil palm plantations intermingled with luxuriant tropical rainforest, rivers and mountain ranges. Along the way, visit the Dayak trading town of Serian with its colourful local market.

At the Batang Ai National Park, board a longboat to traverse the Batang Ai Reservoir to reach an authentic Iban longhouse and be welcomed by the natives. Tour the longhouse. Observe the longhouse dwellers at work. Join them as they carry out their daily chores. Or, just swim in the river and relax by the riverbank.

In the evening, socialize with the headman and his people with a presentation of gifts and cultural performances.

Don't forget to keep a sharp eye out for wildlife - the Batang Ai National Park is home to wild Orang Utans. At the very least, try to spot some of their nests perched high atop the tree canopies. (B, L, D)

Day 4:    Iban Longhouse to Batang Ai Longhouse Resort

Witness a blowpipe demonstration before taking the boat to a 3-star longhouse resort surrounded by beautiful lush tropical rainforests. Detour to a stream where you might need to hop off and push the longboat against the current of the clearwater stream. Later, stop by a scenic spot for a refreshing dip and native style lunch before continuing on.

The resort surroundings offers a host of activities and places to explore at your leisure. Discover the canopy walks of the local rainforest. Absorb the peaceful surroundings by the swimming pool. Sip exotic cocktails in wood surroundings as you look out at the peaceful lake from the Wong Irup Lounge. Embark upon one of the sightseeing tours. Go fishing at tropical lakes and waterfalls. Take a scenic hike on the nearby hiking trails. (B, L, D)

Day 5:    Batang Ai Longhouse Resort to Damai Beach

Journey to Damai Beach for a few days of rest and relaxation. The journey back will be several hours overland and there will be an enroute stop for a delicious local lunch.

Once at Damai Beach, the rest of your day is free at your leisure to rest and soak up some rays. (B, L)

Day 6:    Damai Beach

Discover Kuching's Wetlands National Park, which covers an area of 6,610 hectares on the estuarine reaches of the Sibu Laut and Salak rivers. The park is mostly comprised of a saline mangrove system that includes an extensive network of marine waterways and tidal creeks with small patches of heath forest here and there.

This wetland cruise allows the opportunity to explore the flora & fauna that thrive on untouched mangrove forest along the coasts of Buntal, Santubong, Salak and Wetland National Park. If luck is with you, you may spot some local wildlife, such as Proboscis monkeys, long tailed macaques, silver-leaf monkeys, monitor lizards, kingfishers, white-bellied sea eagles, storks, or even the rare Irrawady Dolphin. (B)

Day 7:    Damai Beach

A day all for yourself. Take advantage of this time to visit the beach or relax by your resort's poolside. You could also take the opportunity to visit the award-winning Sarawak Cultural Village located nearby. This day is free to do as you please. (B)

Day 8:    Depart Damai Beach

The last day of the package is always a bittersweet thing. We will arrange your final transfer to the Kuching International Airport to catch your onwards flight.
