Come and discover all the attractions of beautiful Madagascar, searching for its most famous inhabitants the Lemurs and Sifakas. This is a land of the unexpected, which is home to some of the greatest biological diversity on Earth, with many species of colorful chameleons and frogs. You will travel from the rice paddy, Asiatic feeling highland plateaus to the small remaining patches of tropical rainforests and Madagascar’s pretty tropical beaches.

Learn about the unique culture of the island’s people while visiting local villages and an orphanage. Contribute to the preservation of the rainforest while planting a tree. Discover the interesting mountain formations of Ranomafana and Isalo. Relax on the beautiful beaches and go on a cruise of the Pangalanes Canal.

See the islands famous giant baobab trees and travel to Ampefy, a volcanic region where there are many volcanic geysers and a stunning waterfall. You will discover a land of varied terrain and culture which will surprise you and debunk your expectations.

Day 1:    Antananarivo (1B)
 
 

Upon your arrival you will be transferred to your hotel in Madagascar’s capital Antananarivo. The city is founded where three hills meet and overlook Lake Anosy which is surrounded by beautiful Jacaranda and Flamboyant trees. You can spend the rest of the day relaxing of head out and explore the sights such as the burnt out shell of the Rova. The city has surprisingly beautiful architecture which is a mix of French Countryside and Indonesia. There are many great restaurants in the city.

Day 2:    Andasibe-Matadia National Park (1B, 1D)
 
 

Travelling to the East Coast of Madagascar, you arrive at the scenic rainforest of Andasibe. The rainforest is famous for the wide variety of chameleons and frogs which occur here and in the afternoon you will get to visit a chameleon and frog nurseries. In the evening you will go on a walk to see if you can see some mouse lemurs, chameleons and frogs.

Day 3:    Andasibe-Matadia National Park (1B, 1D)
 
 

On the second day, speak to our consultant about adding an optional walk through the scenic Mitsinjo Forest Park. There is also an optional activity where you can contribute to the re-forestation program by planting a tree along the trail. In the afternoon, go on another walk through the forest in search of lemurs in Mantadia or continue your explorations during a tree-top canopy tour.

Day 4:    Antsirabe (1B, 1D)
 
 

Today, you will return to Tana and continue through the highland plateau with its many rice paddies to the old spa town of Antsirabe which has many beautifully preserved colonial buildings. You will be staying at the Residence Madalief which was founded to help support a nearby orphanage.

In the morning you can take a walk through the surrounding villages and learn about the lifestyle of the local villagers. Alternatively, you can visit some nearby beautiful volcanic lakes. You can also rent a bike and ride to some local crafters who hand-make some local curios and handicrafts.

Day 6:    Sahambavy (1B, 1D)
 
 

Today, you will travel to the magnificently located Lac Hotel situated on the bank of the Lake Sahambavy, halfway between the North and the South of Madagascar. Lac Hôtel offers breathtaking panoramic views of the island's unique tea plantation.

Day 7:    Manakara (1B, 1D)
 
 

Catch the train and travel from the highlands to the coast through the tropical rainforest, banana and coffee plantations as well as rice fields. You will stay in a resort surrounded by luxurious gardens near the Pangalanes Canal, the sea and beautiful sandy beaches which are perfect for taking a stroll along.

Day 8:    Ranomafana (1B, 1D)
 
 

Start with a half day  boat tour along the Canal de Pangalanes to see the picturesque palm trees, fruit trees, lakes and swamps which form the canal. In some places the canal is divided from the ocean by a stretch of land no wider than 50 meters. In the afternoon you return to the highlands by car and then descend again to the forested Ranomafana National Park. You’ll spend the night in Hotel Grenat in simple bungalows which are situated directly on the river.

Spend the next day exploring the park on foot. The journey takes between 4 and 6 hours of slow walking with lots of stop to see animals. Afternoon free to visit one of the natural hot water springs.

Day 10:    Ranohira (1B, 1D)
 
 

You will have quite a long day of travelling today over the rough plateau d’Horombe to the granite rocks of the Isalo Mountain Range. Spend the night at Relais de la Reine.

The next day will be spent exploring the mountain range on foot in search of the famous Ring Tailed Lemurs. There are several walks possible which include the natural swimming hole and/or the canyon des Maki’s where Ring Tails live.

Day 12:    Ifaty (1B, 1D)
 
 

Travel to the spike forest and the beaches of southern Madagascar. Spend the night at Hotel Solidaire in Ifaty. The afternoon is yours at leisure to spend relaxing on the beach, or ask our consultant about arranging some snorkeling and diving. Whale watching excursions are also possible between July and November.

The next day will be spent visiting the spike forest and seeing some of Madagascar’s famous baobab trees which normally look as if they have been planted upside down.

Day 14:    Ambalavao (1B, 1D)
 
 

Today, you will travel through the town of Tulear and continue on to Ambalavao where you will spend the night at the Jacaranda Bungalows.

Day 15:    Andringitra Mountains (1B, 1D)
 
 

You will travel to the Andringitra Mountains which are home to some of the greatest biological diversity on the island as well as 13 species of lemurs. Spend the night at Camp Catta which is sitauted at the base of a massive rockface.

Day 16:    Andringitra Mountains (1B, 1D)
 
 

Spend the day exploring this interesting mountain range where huge granite mountains form a mountain chain which is home to more endemic species than anywhere else on the island. Of course the star attraction are the famous ring tailed lemurs which call the area home.

Day 17:    Fianarantsoa (1B, 1D)
 
 

Travel northwards passing through Ambalavao to Fianarantsoa. Before leaving Ambalavao you can visit silk and paper artisanal factories as well as vineyards and perhaps the Zebu market if it falls on a Wednesday.

Day 18:    Ambositra (1B, 1D)
 
 

Heading back to Ambositra today you will pass through the many rice paddies which make up the central highlands. Overnight is spent at the Hotel Artisan.

Day 19:    Antsirabe (1B, 1D)
 
 

Today, you will enjoy a morning walk to the palace of the King in Ambositra, partly over rice paddies and past villages. Lots of couleur locale. In the afternoon, travel on to Antsirabe and once again overnight at Vatolahy.

Day 20:    Ampefy (1B, 1D)
 
 

Travel to Ampefy, a volcanic region where there are many volcanic geysers and a stunning waterfall. The geyser used to shoot much higher, but its pressure has decreased in recent years. Overnight Hotel Kavitaha.

Spend the day relaxing by the sparkling blue pool or take a trip to the Analavory Geyser and the Lilly waterfall. Paddle boating is also available on the crater lake.

This is the last day of your Highlights of Madagascar Package and you will be driven to the airport of Antananarivo for your return flight.
