Backpackers' Paradise - 3 nights

It is located in the west central part of Yunnan Province. Situated at a low  latitude plateau, it has a mild climate all the year round, characterized by little seasonal temperature difference, distinct wet and dry seasons. Endowed with fertile lands, the prefecture is famous for its beautiful landscape and elegant folk customs of ethnic minorities home and abroad. A five hour drive from Kunming, the capital of Yunnan province, this city is a gem, thanks to its medieval walled town.

Day 1:    Arrive in Dali

You will mostly take a public bus from Lijiang or Kunming to Dali. Our driver will transfer you to the hotel located in the Dali ancient town. Rest of the time is free at leisure for you to explore the charming old town. The Ancient City of Dali is widely known among both foreigners and locals alike for its picturesque scenery and its famous history and culture. This ancient city was once a vital communications hub that boasted a dense population and prosperous markets, and as a result, many trade caravans gathered here. On both sides of the city streets there were numerous bustling shops, inns, tea houses and restaurants.Yet another impressive feature of Dali is the city wall. The city wall was 8 metres high and 7 meters thick, with a moat surrounding the city. Rocks filled the inside of the wall and the surface was smoothly bricked over. On the wall there are 45 battlements with 1560 crenels. The circumference of the Ancient City of Dali was 6 kilometers long. The countryside around Dali Ancient Town is an ideal place for a biking or hiking tour. Many travelers to Dali choose to have a day or two day cylcing tour around Erhai Lake or to hike up to the Cangshan Mountain or to the nearby Bai Ehtnic Village in Xizhou.  Biking and Hiking are two of the best ways to experience the fabulous scenery.

Day 2:    Visit Xizhou Bai Morning Market and boat tour on Erhai Lake

In the morning, you will be transferred to Dali Xizhou town by private vehicle. 18 km north of Dali old town (34 km to Xiaguan), Xizhou is the typical town with Bai's characters. Also was once a commercial center of Yunnan, and the birthplace of Bai's modern entrepreneurs. It is said that more than 140 wealthy families built their houses here, including the Yan's, the Yang's, the Dong's and the Zhao's. These houses are characterized by '3 rooms and a wall screening' and '4 joints and 5 courtyards'. '3 rooms and a wall screening' refers that every house boasts a major room flanked by two wing-rooms, and facing the middle room erects a wall screening for the house privacy. '4 joints and 5 courtyards' means the houses have a central courtyard with rooms in all directions; other smaller four courtyards join the central one from four sides to make five courtyards. All these houses are decorated with woodcarvings, colored patterns, marbles and wash drawings, which represents the masterpieces of Bai's architecture.Arrival in Xizhou, visit Xizhou Morning market, feel the rich and traditional Bai People's culture.Walk around the village, then take private vehicle to Cai cun Harbor and start your Erhai boat tour joined with Chinese people together. Erhai Lake is the second largest lake in Yunnan Province, with the Dianchi Lake ranking the first. From a bird's eye view, you will find Erhai Lake is just like a crescent lying quietly between Cangshan Mountain and the Basin of Dali.

The Chinese gave it the name of Erhai Lake because its shape resembles a human ear. On the southern end of Erhai Lake lies Tuanshan Mountain, which is home to Erhai Park, an ideal place to soak in the scenery and natural beauty of the lake and mountains. Enter into the park from the small dock and climb the mountain along the stone steps. At the top of the mountain you will see the Sea Watching Pavilion with flying eaves. Stroll in this pavilion and feast your eyes on the scenery of Erhai Lake and Cangshan Mountain. It is said that on the sea bed there grows a very big jade cabbage, and in fact the clear water is the jade liquid flowing from the heart of the cabbage.During the boat tour, you will have chance to enjoy a 70 minutes cormorant fishing show. Drive back to hotel.
