Arusha National Park Day Trip - Excursion

This is the closest park to Arusha but is quite often overlooked by most people on the northern circuit, despite the fact that it offers fantastic views of both Mount Meru and Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa. It has the Ngurdoto Crater and the picturesque Momela Lakes, each of which is a different hue of blue and green due to the presence of algae.

Day 1:    Arusha National Park Day Trip (1L)

Your departure from Arusha will be at 08:00 am and you will travel to Arusha National Park which lies about 60km outside of town. Once you enter the park you will pass through some montane forest which is one of the only places on the northern safari circuit where you can see the black-and-white colobus monkey. In the middle of the forest lies the Ngurdoto Crater which has a marshy floor which is home to numerous buffalo and warthogs.

Further northwards lies the picturesque Momela Lakes which are known for their pretty hues of blue and green dueto algae which are home to large flocks of flamingos and waterbuck.

You will also get to see giraffe and grazing herds of zebra as will as diminutive dik-dik which is the smallest antelope in Africa. Please note that elephants are uncommon and lion are absent in the park.

One of the highlights of visiting the park are the spectacular views of Mount Meru (4,566m) and sweeping views of the snow capped peaks of Kilimanjaro. The park can be the base for hikes up Mount Meru where you can see the flaming spikes of re-hot pokers and everything draped in Spanish Moss before changing into the alpine desert with giant lobelias and many everlastings. The hikes afford spectacular views towards Kilimanjaro and the Massai Steppe.
